Movie Review-Ghostbusters

July 15, 2016

With the exception of a few small differences, like an all female team of ghostbusters and special effects that are much more advanced than in the original 1984 movie, the new Ghostbusters movie is almost exactly the same as the old one. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are Erin and Abby, two childhood friends who have always hoped to prove the existence of ghosts and other things that go bump in the night and when something strange starts to happen in the neighborhood of Manhattan they get the chance to put their "ghostbusting skills" to the test.

The two ladies are joined by Kate McKinnon, who plays Jillian, a rockin' chick who just happens to be a nuclear engineer and Patty (comedian Leslie Jones) a former New York City subway worker who convinces the ladies to let them join the team because, she actually had a close encounter with a ghost in the subway and because, she has access to a car from her uncle's funeral home (which becomes the Ghostbusters mobile).
Cameos from most of the original living Ghostbusters, such as Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver, give the movie an even more familiar feeling of deja vu for the movie goers who are old enough to remember the original movie. On the other hand kids, who never saw the original, will have a fun time with the new cast of characters on the big screen.

Ghostbusters is directed by Paul Feig, who directed the hilarious movie, "Bridesmaids" with Melissa McCarthy. So I went in to see Ghostbusters with high expectations for a funny movie. However, uh, not so much. It's not nearly as comical as "Bridesmaids", a movie that had me bent over and screaming with laughter.

The movie is rated PG-13 for some scary images and some crude humor. It has a run time of just under two hours. For some family oriented fun and a few laughs at the movies, I think ya better call The Ghostbusters. Not too original, but it's a fun movie that the family can enjoy together. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Ghostbusters a LARGE.
