During a summer where the movie box office scene has been dominated by animated films, Star Trek Beyond is a legitimate live action "blockbuster" for the summer movie season. The third installment in the rebooted Star Trek franchise has plenty of bang for the buck and will probably be one of the smash hits of the summer.
The same old gang of Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Bones (Karl Urban) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) are back and Idris Elba joins the ensemble as Krall, a ruthless enemy who lures The Enterprise and her crew to his desolate planet. Elba is fantastic playing an evil villain but ladies will surely be disappointed at the fact that he plays the part almost entirely in a special effects costume that covers his entire head in a latex head.
Also, Star Trek Beyond has a bit more comedy than the previous two films, probably because it was co-written by English comedian Simon Pegg, who also plays Scotty in the movie. But make no mistake, there are enough explosions and sci-fi space battles to keep you popcorn chomping for the entire movie.
The chemistry is great between the old cast members and, good news for Trekies, another Star Trek movie is already set for release in 2017. This movie franchise still has a lot of tread left on the tires.
Star Trek Beyond is rated PG-13 for some sci-fi violence and it has a run time of two hours. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I give this movie my highest rating-JUMBO (with extra butter). Pay the few extra bucks and see the movie in IMAX 3D. I really enjoyed this film!
