Luther Vandross sold over 35 million records worldwide during his recording career and won eight Grammy Awards.
His May 6, 2004 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, was his last public appearance. Vandross died on July 1, 2005, at the JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey, at the age of 54.
But as Luther said in his acceptance speech at the 2004 Grammy's (where he won Song of the Year for "Dance With My Father), "When I say goodbye it's never for long, because I believe in the power of love."
He would have been 66 today.
