Movie Review-Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
In Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, French director Luc Besson (Taken series, The Professional, and Columbiana) has created an assualt on the senses. The special effects in this movie are breath taking and the story, while predictable, is entertaining.
Dane DeHaan is Major Valerian and the "City of a Thousand Planets" refers to the space station city Alpha, where species from all over the universe are united to perserve their worlds from all over the galaxy. Cara Delevinghe plays Major Valarian's fellow space soldier and love interest. There is great chemistry between the two as they work together to solve a mystery that threatens to destroy the city of Alpha.
Rihanna has a small scene in the movie as an exotic dancer named Bubble. As a Rihanna fan I enjoyed her short stay in the movie but honestly her appearance does nothing to move along this two hour and seventeen minute long movie.
The entire world of the movie is a movie set and it delivers in the sci-fi monsters department too. I haven't seen such a good collection of monsters and aliens in a movie since the last Star Wars movie. Just the visuals alone will keep you entertained.
While good, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is not great. It's rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I give Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets a LARGE.
