Proud Mary Has Disappointing Opening Weekend

Proud Mary, a "Blackplotation" style movie staring Taraji P. Henson had a disappointing opening weekend finishing at #8 with $10 million. Screen Gems seemed to do all that it could to keep movie critics away from reviewing the film until it actually opened in wide release on Friday. Truthfully, the flaws with the movie were more technical, such as in the way it was shot and in the editing of the film, rather than the blame of the movie's star. Taraji, who plays a hired killer, is the best part of the movie. And Danny Glover's Godfather character is also strong.

The movie has a run time of 1 hour and 46 minutes and a part of me can't help but wonder if the continuity of the movie was lost in trying to squeeze it into a shorter time frame. It's not the best movie of the year, nor is it the worst, but Taraji P. deserved a better group of movie makers around her in this "almost good" movie.

As for the rest of the weekend's box office numbers; Jumanji finished at #1 with another big weekend and a take of $22 million. Steven Spielberg's Oscar contender, The Post, came in second with $18 million and Liam Neeson's thriller, The Commuter, brought in $13.5 million to finish third.

Since it's the King Holiday weekend Monday's box office receipts will also count toward the final weekend count.
