Solo Opens Weaker Than Expected But Still #1
Solo: A Star Wars Story was #1 at the box office over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend, but the movie grossed less than expected with just over $83 million in box offfice receipts. Disney had expected an openinig of over $100 million and between $130-$150 million for the four day holiday, including Monday.
The disappointing open leaves the industry guessing. Did the new Star Wars prequel come out too soon? (The last Star Wars movie was released just five months ago.) Or was it the heavy competition from Deadpool 2, 2nd with $42 million, and Avengers: Infinity War? With a production price tag of over $300 million, some may already consider Solo to be a flop.
