Movie Review-Skyscraper

July 13, 2018

Skyscraper is a very improbable yet entertaining new movie with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.  Johnson is a former FBI hostage negotiator who is also a war veteran.  He tragically loses both his legs in a hostage situation where he tries to save a family from a mentally deranged father.  (As soon as you see Johnson putting on his prosthesis legs you get that feeling that those metallic legs will come into play later in the movie.)

Skyscraper is set in China and it is part Die Hard and part Towering Inferno.  In the movie, a group of terrorists cause a fire on the 96th floor and Johnson, whose family is trapped in their apartment on that floor, has to rescue them but now he's wrongly suspected of being involved in the explosion that took place in the building.

The things that Johnson does in the movie are terribly unbelievable, like jumping from tower to tower from the 200th floor.  I also think Duct Tape must have a sponsor tie in with the film because there are a number of running gags involving Duct Tape.

Besides the action, the importance of family is a strong theme in the movie. From the opening scene, where Johnson loses his legs trying to save a family, to the scenes in the world's highest building where he has to rescue his own family, Johnson's character shows that there isn't anything he would not do to save his family.

Summertime is a time to suspend all disbelief with blockbuster movies.  If you can do that with this movie I think you'll find it enjoyable.  It's rated PG-13 and on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate Skyscraper a LARGE.
