Movie Review-The Hate You Give
THE HATE YOU GIVE is based on a young adult novel by Angie Thomas, a Jackson, MS author whose mission is to focus on the "Black Lives Matter" movement. It's directed by George Tillman Jr, who directed the 1997 movie SOUL FOOD and other movies about African American life like BARBERSHOP, ROLL BOUNCE and NOTORIOUS. As a team, the writer and director deliver an Oscar-caliber film that is thought-provoking and that asks a lot of questions about why we continue with the epidemic of shootings of young black men in the African American community.
Amandla Stenberg plays Starr Carter, a high school student who is trapped in two worlds. She lives in a predominantly African American neighborhood where drugs and violence are a way of life and she attends a white upscale high school that her parents enrolled her not just to increase her chances of going to college but for her own safety. The young actress is brilliant in her role. The entire cast gives a great performance including Regina Hall as her mother, Anthony Mackie as the neighborhood drug lord and Common plays her uncle, who is also a cop.
Starr has to make some very adult decisions after her childhood friend, and her first crush is killed by police in a traffic stop where a white police officer mistakes a hairbrush for a weapon.
THE HATE YOU GIVE asks some questions that most of us have never considered. For example how a black officer would react to an African American boy if he was in the same situation. It also asks why is there is so much hate by cops aimed at young black men?
THE HATE YOU GIVE is a "must see movie." You'll leave the theater with a heavy heart and the movie will surely open up a new dialogue on police shootings. However; in the end, the movie has an uplifting message that will leave you wanting more. The good news is the author is working on a new book called "On the Come Up" which will be released in 2019.
The movie is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 2 hours and 13 minutes. I highly recommend this movie. On my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" THE HATE YOU GIVE rates a JUMBO.
